I recently had one of those birthdays –  you know the kind that end with an Oh. Say no more ;)

I’m not really one for birthdays or a fuss, Oh ones or otherwise,  but wanted to share here a sweet & thoughtful gift that traveled across the miles to me from friends & family.

Inspired by The Friendship Beads (snippets of which can be seen here here & here)  that belonged to Dame Ellen Terry & which are displayed at Smallhythe Place in Tenterden, Kent.

Each bead was given to her  by a dear friend.

My sister secretly organised family & friends all back in the UK to go & gather a bead for me.

What arrived in my mailbox was a package full of beads,  each individually wrapped with a note attached from afar.  Some even came wrapped up like sweeties in a stripey sweetie bag! eep!

friendship beads

These have all been strung together now and are hanging as a garland in my sewing space :)

Like a scrappy quilt on a string, its crazy randomness makes me happy & reminds me of all the crazy randoms in my life ;)

It’s something that will be added to over the years I am hoping & I have a few crazy randoms in the bead tin to add to it myself I reckon.

I really love these kinds of collaborative gifts – have you received or done something similar?

Such fun!

Happy Birthday Nova! I had one of those oh! birthdays last year. Those zeros seem to sneak up on us much too quickly!

I’m rather late to this birthday party, so happy belated Nova! I love the bead idea! That must be such a festive little garland in your sewing space. For my 40th, my husband arranged for all of my family and friends to send me a hand written letter. I have long been saddened by the lack of handwritten messages in the world these days and this was such a special gift to receive. When they all started pouring in, every day was like a birthday all over again. This year I had an unexpected gift on my 46th, wee Prince George was born on my birthday, while I was in the UK for the Fat Quarterly retreat! Pretty cool, eh?
