The cool change & wet weather that we encountered last weekend was just the push I needed to finish hand quilting & put this quilt to bed.

it’s full of lovelies & uglies, trash & treasure, oldies & newies, gifted & swapped, selvedges I’d been saving for goodness knows what – each has a place & a reason to be in it for me. Sometimes that’s all a quilt needs to be. I love it.

I quilted it with a combination of relaxed zig zags on the machine and some hand quilting with Perle thread.

This quilt began as an effort to get a grip on the scrap stash. In truth it hardly made a dent!

project notes:
- inspired by this tutorial
- triangle size 6″ finished
- finished quilt approx 64″ x 80″
- backed with an ikea print & a strip of scraps to make up the size

Everything about this quilt is incredible — the scrappy fabrics, the backing, the gorgeous hand stitching. Well done!!
Nova, this is beautiful!! The quilting is just perfect too. What a lovely quilt to snuggle up in. X
stunning… as always! w-o-w.
Fun stash buster. Pity those little scrappies self-replicate like Tribbles (star trek)
Outstanding. I love your quilt and have pinned the tutorial!
Love this make! I’ve been trying to use up my scraps and have noticed the same. Barely makes a dent every time. Maybe if it was all scraps?
Loving the scrappiness of the zig-zags!
Oh, I absolutely, love, love, LOVE this! Would happily make the exact same thing. The quilting is to die for. Aren’t you clever to combine machine and hand quilting that way.
I absolutely love it. Thank you for the link to the tutorial.
The handquilting really sets it off. Sandi
Argh! Beautiful! I love that you used real scraps instead of cutting new yardage into little bits. This is up there with your shirt quilt as one of my Favourite Quilts On The Internet.
This quilt is so beautiful Nova! I love the scrappiness, the brightness and all that solid. love x
Wow, it’s great! I’ve been looking at all the square scrayy quilts and they just don’t grab me- but THIS I want! I doubt it would dent my scrap baskets either, but it would be fun to try. And I need a new couch one, my daughter ‘stole’ my other 2! Thanks for including the details, I’m off to look at them. And decide whether mine could be as nice as yours!
I love your quilt and the pearle cotton hand quilting was a very nice touch.
Nova, this is just gorgeous. Everything about it is my favourite – favourite shapes (zig zags), favourite pleasing conflict of color filled scraps and patterns and pure pale cotton, favourite mix of machine and hand quilting … the feeling I get from your work is that every decision is significant and that every stitch is meaningful. I’m sure you have your days, as we all do, when that’s maybe not true, but there is a quality about your work that is irresistable. Joy in the small moments. Love it.
I love everything about this quilt and the hand quilting is just what it needed to make it even more special
Nova, that quilt is amazing. I love the kantha style quilting too. It really sets it all off.
I love zigzags, that’s good one Nova!
I’ve never seen that method before. Maybe I’ll have to put that one on the to-do list.
It’s really lovely.
I love it!
Like the quilt. The back had turned charming, too. I have began a quilt from recycled shirts and think I have to add solids between all multicolored strips. Thanks!
Now THAT’S a way to do a zigzag! Wow – this is great. The construction is really interesting but the hand-quilting makes this quilt. Love it!
Wow, so wonderful quilt!!! I like the hand quilting too. Really great job :) Have a nice week! Jolana
fabulous. I’m not usually a fan of scrappy quilts, but I think all the white in this really sets those scraps off. The quilting is beautiful.
I just love it. I love all the scrappy fabrics and the beautiful quilting.
So beautiful! Love the scrappiness, the zigzags, the colours. And the quilting! I’m going to go now before my exclamation mark button gets tired… ;-)
That’s a great quilt!
I love this !!!!!

angela
i REALLY like that print on the back… must go to IKEA now…
This is gorgeous!
This is so beautiful! Love the selvedge edge that is included along with the hand stitching.
Wow! It is totally gorgeous – absolutely!!! I love it. One day – I WILL make a quilt!
Stunning! I love everything about it, from the scrappi-ness to the creative combo of quilting stitches, to the unusual backing. Thanks so much for sharing:)
I love this quilt! Using scrappy triangles to make a zigzag quilt – the idea makes me happy and makes me want to have a go myself. But I hear you about not making a dent in the scrap pile… I love the combination of machine- and handquilting too. This is a quilt to cherish!
Stunningly beautiful! And thanks so much for spelling Perle correctly. Yep – I am one of those. :)
Great quilt. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I love it, and can see why you do too xxx
I love this quilt! What a fabulous way to use up scraps. Love the hand quilting too.
I love this quilt! You’ve inspired me to make one of my own someday soon. I have so many scraps that need to be used.
Gorgeous quilt, and so full of memories it will be well-loved for sure!
I ♥LOVE♥ THIS QUILT! What a great idea for all those pieces you just can’t throw away. And the colorful stitching is just right. You wouldn’t be sharing the pattern anytime soon….would you? A shameless attempt at a subtle hint ;)
Love it! Might have to try something similar for my scraps, could use the tiny ones at the apex! The quilting really makes it!
Just fabulous! I adore everything about this quilt!
I love the big stitch hand quilting! I love this quilt you did a great job.
Lori
What a great quilt, love the hand quilting.
What a great quilt, love it, and I can see how you made it. Love the quilting as well. Superbe.
Oh. My. God. How cool is that!!!!! Makes me want to run and immediately start something like this, too. But wait: to sew list? So many things I want to sew? argh… But really: this was added to my list, too.
I love the combination you chose. I love that you used scraps. I love that you used selvedges, too. (how great is this idea?! I had to smile at the expression “saved for goodness knows what”. :) big grin. I don’t know why I saved them, too. I guess I liked some selvedges projects.)
Oh, and almost forgot to mention: if you didn’t make a dent in your scrap stash here’s someone who likes to get scraps :) Just in case you want to give some away. :) :)
So. Where do I get those extra hours to make something like this, too? Oh, they’re sold out? *sigh* That’s really a pity! :)
And now I go back and look at your photos. :)
Many greetings from here!
Love this quilt. I like how you have used all those bits that you have saved over many years.
Gayle
Just gorgeous Nova. You are a true talent. Kick me if I ever tell you to throw out scraps….
I love it, too! Beautiful job. I took a second, third and fourth look.
It’s very, very, very beautiful!
I love the quilting with the mix of machine and hand quilting, it just makes it perfect.
OH WOW! I LOVE THIS QUILT SO MUCH!
I actually bought some fabric at IKEA just like your quilt back not knowing what to do with it…DEFINITE inspiration!
