… tote bag?
nope, but you can carry it around.
… is it a pillow?
why yes it is! but wait…
…is it a quilt as well..?
yep! that too!
“what?!” i hear you say! “who, what, how?!”
(: easy – it’s a Quillow! or a Planket if you prefer ;) - a pillow that unfolds into a quilt or if you’d rather, a quilt that folds up into a pillow.
I’ve been dying to figure out how to make one of these, so when Laurie kindly sent me some of her new line Pooches & Pickups to have a play with I just couldn’t resist & it all came together really easily without any unpicking or rethinking! Yay! I love it when a plan comes together ;) I took some process shots along the way so if you’re interested I can put together a tutorial of sorts, or the process at least?
I kept the blocks simple, in a fence rail pattern, letting Laurie’s fun designs speak for themselves. I raided the stash and added in some solids, checks, spots & stripes & backed it all with a super soft & snugly chocolate brown chenille. So cuddly!
This little pillow, come play mat, come quilt with a built in foot warmer (!) & useful carry handle for sleepovers etc, is for a little chap whose daddy drives a truck ( or ‘ute’ in Aussie speak ;) ) and they have a big black dog. Pooches & Pickups couldn’t be more perfect for him!
Finished size of quilt is approx 48″ x 64″ & the pillow folds up to approx 16″.
So……do you fancy having a play with some Pooches & Pickups too? Laurie has a fat quarter bundle of the full range for one lucky reader. Yay! Thanks Laurie x For a chance to win please leave one comment only on this post telling us what you’d make with Pooches & Pickups, we’d love to hear! ( please make sure you fill in your email address correctly for a valid entry) The giveaway is open to all & a winner will be randomly drawn on Saturday 14th May at midday Brissie time & announced here shortly after that, the winner will also be notified by email. Good luck!

I think a bento box quilt would be a lovely way to combine and show off these great patterns and colors. They work so well in strip-form – shown by your quilt and so many others, that this would be a funny quilt pattern for them too as well. I have 2 cute little nephews that are all boy – would love to make a quilt for each of them out of this fabric! They idolize their grandpa (my dad) and he happens to drive a pick up truck and has a big black dog too :)
Love your quillow in Pooches and Pillows. If I won, I think I’d make a quilt for my 3 yr old nephew. Thanks for a chance to win some of Laurie’s great new fabric line.
What a cool planket. Would love a tutorial as I need to make a baby gift for a little tyke. Love the chenille idea too!
This is adorable! I’d love to see the process. The quilt part I get, but the pouch is intimidating!
Oooh wonderful quillow. I would definitely love a tutorial for one. It’s a perfect quilt to take to grandma’s house.
I have a little boy and would love this fabric for a quilt for him. Boy fabrics are quite limited and this range is just perfect!
I think you should definitely do a tutorial for this, it’s amazing!! Another great range from Laurie! I’d definitely use it to make a similar project to this one. I’ve got a light blue fleece blanket from Ikea that would be the perfect backing for it….
Such a sweet giveaway! I’m not sure what I’d make yet, but I desperately need boy fabrics! And, for the record, I’d love a tutorial! My grandmother made me one of these when I was a kid, and I ADORE it still! I’d love to make one for my daughter! Thanks!
What a cute idea. I love it! I think I would be tempted to try to make your “Quillow”.
Ha, that’s so very clever of you! I’d love some Pooches and Pickups and make a couple of baby quilts for coworkers who are expecting baby boys this summer! Thanks for the giveaway!
Oh,that looks fantastic. I can think of so many good uses for one of these, that I’d LOVE a quick tutorial on how you did it.
I really want some Pooches and Pickups to make fabric backpacks from my grandsons!
My aunt made me one of these when I was little. Yours is so cute! The Pooches and Pickups line is so cute. Thanks for sharing the loot. Also, congrats on winning the Trimming competition!
A quilt would be nice
[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ’0 which is not a hashcash value.
Oh yes, I so want to play with Pooches and Pickups, pretty please!! I’ve got a couple of little boys to make gifts for – I’d been planning to make quilts and would love to incorporate these fabrics, they’re just perfect!
But now I’ve seen your Quillow Carry that has GOT to be THE project – it’s fantastic! So, tutorial please!!!
Can you tell that I like it a lot? :)
Oh, and thanks for the super giveaway too.
What a great idea. I keep telling myself that next I need to make a lapquilt with a matching pillowcase for it to live in when not in use. I think it would make a lovely Christmas present. I may even tackle if if the Pooches and pickups comes my way. It’s just crying out to be made into a quilt or pillows so why not both?
Love your pillow/blanket, so clever and cute! I’d probably make a quilt for my son: he doesn’t like blankets yet (nearly 2 years old and no blankie!), so I keep thinking that if I find the perfect cute fabric combo, he’ll finally like one. Regardless, it’s adorable fabric! Thanks for the opportunity!
How fun! I have a very dear friend who just discovered she’s having a boy! I may just have to make her one of these….
the line is so fun! and this pillow/quilt/blanket is AMAZING!! i do hope you’ll post a tutorial for it. :) if i win, i’m super tempted to make one of these too!
What a great line! I’d make a quilt for my friend’s little boy who loves trucks and dogs.
Beautiful, amazing quillow!…er, planket! Or whatever! I am only a budding fabric enthusiast, but this line is by far my favorite. I’d love to make a blanket for my 4 month old son with this FQ bundle. Thanks for the giveaway and the inspiration. :)
This new line of fabrics is just so much fun. If I was lucky enough to win, I think I’d make a quilt with matching pillowcase for my step-grandson… and maybe by adding some Kona solids to the mix, I might even be able to stretch that bundle to trim a set of sheets as well.
I would make a little boy quilt–not very original, but I don’t have much in the way of boy fabrics so this would be way fun to play with! Or maybe little drawstring bags for toys and such?
And yes please! on a tutorial or something for the quillow!
I’d love a tutorial! So cute! My husband took home ec. in junior high and made these, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t remember how!
This is so cute! I’d love a tutorial for it!
I’d love to win this new fabric! I’d make a quilt for my little boy on the way!
This is just way too cute and so practical. I for one would love a tutorial and if I had some of Laurie’s fabric I want to make this for my son.
I LOVE what you’ve made. A tutorial would be great. And yes, I’d love to play with this fabric. My boys would love it.
I would love a tutorial for this, it looks fantastic. I really like how bright this fabric is, but still good for boys. This fabric would be “almost” perfect for my nephew, he’s a farmer’s son and has a black and white dog.
I would totally make a qwilliow ( although clearly we would call it a planket!) fir my 4 year old:-)
This is so stinkin’ adorable!!! Would love to see the process… :) I’d like to say I’d make a patchwork tote bag for a little cutie I know, but in reality, I would probably try to copy your Quillow, it’s perfect! And said cutie and his momma would enjoy it as well!
Oh how I would love to make this quillow for one of my grandsons. Thanks for a chance to win. Please write a tutorial!
Nova, this is ingenious!!! I would love to have the fat quarter bundle to make one of these adorable quillows :0) {Congrats on your wonderful collection of creations for umbrellaprints Trimmings!!!}
cute planket! I actually have no idea what I’d make, but I’d think of something (or lots of things) to make for all the little men in my life… maybe a pair of quilts for my cousin’s boys?
I would like to make this project. I could see my grandson carrying this around.
I might just make that with the fabric if you post the tutorial, I’d love to see it. What a cute idea and adorable fabric.
That is genius! I would definitely love a tutorial for that. The fabric is perfect too. Quillow!
So cute! My sister in law made us a quillow like 10 yrs ago but it wasn’t this cute:)
I have a nephew in Sydney who I will meetvfor the first time in December, he’ll be three by then. He loves “brums” and his Kodi Bear (the family dog) better than anything else, so this fabric would be PERFECT ! And I think your quillow would be perfect, so long as you do post the instructions :-)
I love this new line, I would make my nephew a quilt, he could really use one right now, my brother was just granted sole custody and I think he misses his mom some nights and he loves to snuggle with the baby one I made him. He is almost six now and could use a big boy quilt.
I love your quillow! my aunt used to make them when I was little, my mom keeps asking me to make one for her, progress pictures/tutorial would be awesome.
Would be great for the beach as well.
What fun fabric! I’d love to win some, I think I’d make a little quilt for my 8 year old nephew, he loves dogs and he loves to ride in his dad’s big pick up truck. I think he could use a new quilty, and I think I’d like to make one of these Quillows or Plankets! Yes please on the tutorial!!
Is it bad that what I’d make is an exact replica of your quillow/planket? :)
ps: tutorial would be fab – this would be a great summer blanket for our many camping trips.
What a great idea! I would love to have a tutorial of that “quillow” – what a funny name!
Wow! I would love a tute for this. And, a cute quilt for a little boy would definitely be made if I am lucky enough to win the giveaway. Thanks for the chance!
Yes! and Yes! I would love to know how to make your Quillow — three — one for each grandkid. And I would love to have the Pooches and Pickups fat quarters to play with, too.
Thanks.
ps. And congrats on winning the “trimmings” challenge
Pure genius! x
Darling quillow! My Grandmother made one from Noahs ark material when my oldest was toddling and it ended up being a hit with the next two boys as well…was the best car blanket/pillow until it was loved to shreds. Should prpbably replace :) I think making some little wallets out of Pooches & Pickups would be too cute!
I would make the quillow just like yours…I have a nephew who it would be just perfectly perfect for! Lisa in Texas
This turned out great! I’d love to make something similar to your quillow for packing to the beach! Do you have a tutorial you recommend for instructions?
Thanks!
ooooohhhhhh, I think I might make a rail fence quilt with this line. Great idea! Or a square in a square. Decisions, decisions…
That brown fluffy fabric looks sooooooooo cosy and inviting!
With this prize, I’d love to make some fabric baskets for my toddlers (growing) collection of toy cars, aeroplanes, books, lego, etc etc!!
Looks like a quick and simple one Nova, and so so effective with this pattern, love the fabric. Would make something for my grandsons birthday coming up soon.
Adorable, thank you
Love this idea, especially for the lounge room I hate having the blankets haning over the chairs, this would be ideal.
My boy is car obsessed so I recon he would love it if I made him a pencil case and book cover for school! Thanks Nova.
I’d love to make a little quilt for a new little boy coming into the world soon! Love this line – it’s so rare to find cute boy prints!
I think these fabrics would be great for a picnic blanket. If you do put together some directions, a picnic blanket with a handle would be perfection! I need one for the summer & summer doesn’t last very long here in Canada, so I better get started soon ;)
Love it! I have been waiting for this fabric. I love her lines. I think I’ll make a messenger bag to take when we walk the dog.
I would make a zillow! A zig zag quillow for my nephew. He is totally into truck and that line is perfect for him!
I would copy you and make this exact thing! PLEASE post a tutorial. I love this!
I made my first one of these a few years or so ago. Really it was my first quilt ^_^ do you have a recipe becasue I would like to make another one if you don’t mind sharing it.
love it. It is adorable.
I’d love to make a similar quilt :D, it’s beautiful
Thanks for the chance!
a quilt for sure…maybe picnic quilt? maybe bed quilt for my son…he would certainly need a pillow with these
That is… AWESOME. I haven’t seen a quillow in quite a while – my grandma used to make them! Pickups and Pooches would most definitely be made into one for my 2 year old… he’s gotta have something cool for that first overnight stay at his grandma’s! :)
I think I’d have to make a little boy blanket, for sure – maybe a “planket” if you’ll post progress shots so I can figure it out!! What a great idea!! Thanks for the chance to win!!
I want to make a quillow!
Actually my DH fell in love with this fabric. Can you believe it. Since he saw it he has been going on about needing a quilt to keep in his 1952 Ford pickup (that the dog rides in the back of, of course). He claims it would make it look more classic if a quilt was draped over the seat at car shows. So if I won that is what I would make, a quilt for my DH’s classic truck.
I’m not sure what I would make just yet but I have three boys and I’m sure I’ll find something! Most likely it will be something for the youngest, a backpack perhaps? I’m loving seeing all of the projects that are being made with this adorable fabric, your quillow tops the list! Please please please make a tutorial!!
Love the fabric! I would make a fun quilt for my 2 year old son. Thanks for the giveaway!
Well, I have a little grandson who would love a quillow! If a certain wonderful blogger does a tute on it (hint, hint)
I love Laurie’s designs. I’m not sure what I’d make, but I’d put her fabric to good use!and your quillow/planket is awesome!
This fabric is begging to be made into a quilt for a special little boy!
I would use this fabric to make a quilt for my grandson. Such cute fabric. Thanks for a chance to win.
I LOVE this new line or Lauries and I LOVE your quillow. I’d love to have a go at making one with the Pooches and Pickups fabric, I have a new baby boy that needs a quilt/playmat/quillow and that would be perfect.
I wanted to make a Quillow way back when I started quilting (14 years ago!), but when I gave up quilting because I didn’t like the fabrics, I forgot about it! Now? With Laurie’s fantabulously fun fabrics? A quillow might just have to be added to my to-sew list! :)
absolutely love it and what a great idea! I would love to make a quilt with it, love the fabric!
I would make a quilt for my naughty 3 year old nephew.
I love this line. I’d make a baby boy quilt for a friend that just had a baby. :)
I know a four-year old who would love a quillow to take home after his visit in July. Thanks for the chance to win such fun fabric.
Ooh definitely some toys for the boys in my life – all the beautiful girly prints I have just haven’t got them as excited as this line! Thanks for the opportunity x
Woof woof! I’d make a quilt for a friend wh is expecting a baby boy this summer
I would make a quillow just like you!
Too cute! A quillow sounds pretty fabulous! I’d like to make one for Craft Hope! :)
Think I would make a quillow as well. Have done several before, but this would be for my son. It’s so hard to find nice fabric for boys, this is just lovely. Thank you.
Your quillow is lovely, the backing looks so comfy! I think I’d have to make one of these for my nephew, he loves anything with four wheels!
How cute is your Quillow?!?!?! I would love to use Pickups and Pooches to make one for my grandson in Missouri, Logan. He means so much to me, and I would love to send him something to keep him cozy when the Missouri winter rolls around…..brrrr…..
Thanks for the chance! 8-)
I love the idea…..I would love to know how you made it…I have 3 boys and we live in remote WA…what a great idea for camping. Could you let me into your secret???
I love this fabric! I would make a little quilt for a friend’s little boy! Perfect!
That chenille looks really cozy. Is it difficult to work with?
My (car mad) oldest boy is about to move out of his toddler bed into a Big Boy Bed, and that fabric would be perfect for a “Peak Hour” quilt. http://dontlooknow.bigcartel.com/product/peak-hour
Hello:
We just retired near the beach and I would make one to keep in my husband’s new “retirement” pickup truck for our fun trips to the beach. Love all Laurie’s fabrics; thanks for the chance to win some.

michelletripper(at)yahoo(dot)ca
I would love to make this quillow! But I would imagine a fq pack would be too small, so some pants for my baby would be cute!
This project is adorable! Thanks for the chance to win and looking forward to the tutorial :)
I love the quillow/planket! A tutorial would be so awesome. I love how great the fabrics work for it too!

I love your creation! Laurie’s fabrics are so inspiring.
If I won I’d probably make a Picnic blanket!
I must make one of these…stat!!!! So if I were to win this fab giveaway, I’d have to set it aside for just this project. Sorry to copy, but wow, I just love it. Thanks for sharing.
What a creative idea. I would love to know how you made it. Please please share this with us.
My Little boy just moved into his first big boy bed and hence needs a new “no longer baby” quilt… Being a boy he loves dogs and trucks.
But I am far away in Germany. So it’s okay, if I cannot play along due to shipping.
your quillow is genius! please do post a tutorial! and if i had some pooches and pickups i would definitely try to make a quillow with them.
Gorgeous happy colors. I’d love to make quilt for my son out of these wonderful fabrics. I love all the wonderful projects you make. Nova your blog is the best!

[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ’0 which is not a hashcash value.
I love the quillow. I would love to make some of those for my kids to use in the car on long trips. If I won this fabric I would use it to make something for my son, who loves both Pooches & Pickups!
How ADORABLE!!
Both your fabric line and the creation. This may not be original, but I’d love to make a quillow from the set you’re giving away! Would love to see a tutorial!
Thanks for the opportunity,
Cindy in California, US
How beautiful! The quillow and the fabrics. I would make a gift for a baby boy just born to friends who live halfway around the world from us, in New Zealand. How about a quilt made in Denmark with fabric from Australia for a boy in New Zealand?
oh, a super duper giveaway! Wish I had the skills for pj’s, but alas I’ve not ventured into clothing, yet! So……a quilt for my youngest it would have to be. Poor boy still tries to wrap himself up in his cot quilt!
Love the quilt…can’t wait for the tutorial!
Wow – I’m in awe. Great little project and would love to see a tutorial sometime.
Thanks for the chance to get my mitts on some of those little pooches!
I’d love to see how you did this.
And I’d love the chance to use the pickups and pooches on something fun here, too. Great giveaway! Thanks!
I love this! I’ve been adding similar projects to my site (FaveQuilts.com). I added a bed roll tutorial (http://www.favequilts.com/Nap-Mats/DIY-Bed-Roll) yesterday and a really similar pillow/quilt/backpack last week (http://www.favequilts.com/Kids-Quilts/Blanket-to-Backpack-Tutorial-Part-1). I’m looking for more of this type of project to add to my site, and I would love to add yours once you write it up. I’ll keep an eye out for it!
I would love a tutorial for the Quillow … new great nephew expected in August :)
I’m quite torn – i think that this fabric would be equally cute in dog accessories (i’m thinking collar, leash, bag for carrying toys, treats, and pick-up bags!) as it would be in vehicle accessories (i’m thinking car garbage bag, head rest cover, and visor-mounted cd holder!)
Congrats on winning the contest–you deserved to! Your quillow is awesome–I’d love to make one just like it for my boys.
Wow- I love it! So cute. I do hope you will post a tutorial for it.
thanks for sharing
Tami
Love the quillow! I definetly think you should do a little picture tutorial if you’re up for it. Thanks for a chance at the fun fabric too.
